NFL approves 10-minute overtime

Bob Donnan / USA TODAY Sports

The NFL passed a measure Tuesday to cut its overtime period from 15 to 10 minutes in the preseason and regular season, a league official confirmed to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The vote was held at the league's spring meeting in Chicago.

Two games during the 2016 season went the full 15 minutes of overtime and resulted in ties. Some teams that have played recent overtime games complained of the effects the extended extra period could have for clubs playing on short weeks.

In the last five seasons, overtimes have lasted, on average, under eight minutes.
