Report: NFL to reduce overtime to 10 minutes

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The NFL is expected to officially reduce the length of overtime from 15 minutes to 10 minutes via a vote at the league meetings Tuesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"It's happening," a league official informed Schefter.

The effects of the change are expected to be minor since, over the last five seasons, games that have gone into overtime have lasted an extra seven minutes and 43 seconds on average, according to NFL Network's Judy Battista.

Two games during the 2016 season went the full 15 minutes and resulted in ties.

The NFL is billing the proposal as a player safety issue, as a 75-minute game isn't viable for the league's athletes.
