Packers CEO: Talk of firing McCarthy 'was nonsense'
The Green Bay Packers' second-half dismantling of the New York Giants' vaunted defense Sunday should ensure head coach Mike McCarthy returns to Green Bay next season.
If you ask Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy, McCarthy's job security was never in doubt.
"That was nonsense," Murphy told NFL.com's Michael Silver. "We've been through rough patches before, and we've always bounced back. Though, I have to admit, this one's a pretty remarkable turnaround."
When the Packers sat at 4-6 in late November, calls for McCarthy and longtime defensive coordinator Dom Capers to be fired were impossible to ignore.
Then Aaron Rodgers uttered the words "run the table" and the Packers haven't lost since.
It's hasn't been all smooth sailing for McCarthy, and the criticism that he's a mediocre coach propped up by an all-time great quarterback still lingers on the fringes, but the voices calling for McCarthy's ouster have mostly been silenced.
Most importantly, it appears the few voices with the power to fire McCarthy have made up their minds.
