Packers president keeping faith in coach, GM's 'track record'

The Green Bay Packers are in as tough of a skid as they've seen in years, but team president Mark Murphy is staying positive and trusting his guys.

On a current four-game losing streak, the 4-6 Packers are known for staying with the same coaches, front office staff, and players for longer than most. Murphy is hoping that their "track record" will steer the team back to the win column.

"I do hear from a lot of fans. And I tell fans: Like them, I'm disappointed," Murphy told WTMJ radio, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. "Certainly, the season hasn't gone the way we had all hoped, but there's a lot of football left to be played.

"And the other thing I tell people is, you've got to look at Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy's track record."

General manager Thompson is in his 11th season with the Packers, while McCarthy is head coaching his 10th. The duo has missed the playoffs only twice, both times before 2009.

McCarthy is rumored to be on the hot seat in Green Bay, but Murphy, who essentially serves as owner for the team with 360,000 shareholders, isn't going to make any quick, reactionary decisions - partly, because he can't.

"The context of that is the Packers are really harmed because they don't have an individual owner who can go in and fire somebody," Murphy said about his position as president. "Well, if you look across the league, when those individual owners do things like that, it usually doesn't turn out very well. The answer isn't just to fire people midseason, especially, (given that) we've had a run of success.

"Our coaches and personnel people and Ted and Mike have shown in the past they can turn things around. I think that taking that approach certainly makes more sense than just firing people to fire people."

The Packers have another crucial game in prime time this week, facing the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.
