Cowboys' Tony Romo: Not placed on IR

Romo (back) was not placed on IR to make room for the newly signed Mark Sanchez on Sunday, as the Cowboys elected to waive Jameill Showers instead, The Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis:

This doesn't necessarily mean Romo will begin the year on the 53-man roster, as the club could still need that spot if they sign another player, but it's at least a sign that the Cowboys haven't completely given up on the idea of getting him back in the lineup somewhat earlier than the current 8-10 week timetable for his recovery would suggest. Whether or not that's just wishful thinking on the part of the front office remains to be seen, however.
