Jets release Antonio Cromartie
Antonio Cromartie's second stint with in New York has come to an end after just one season.
The Jets announced Monday that they've released Cromartie, officially parting ways with the veteran cornerback who joined the club on a four-year, $32-million deal last March.
Cromartie was unable to make the expected impact opposite Darrelle Revis in New York's high-priced secondary. Despite starting in all but one regular-season game, he finished the year without an interception for the first time since 2006.
His initial contract structure carried no guarantees past the first year, however, leaving the Jets with a relatively easy choice to cut ties and save $8 million against the salary cap.
That will give the team some much-needed financial flexibility as it looks to re-sign impending free agents Ryan Fitzpatrick, Muhammad Wilkerson, and Damon Harrison.
Cromartie, meanwhile, gets an early start on free agency. At 31 years old, 10 seasons into his NFL career, he's likely poised for a short-term deal with a team seeking a veteran presence in the defensive backfield.
