Rockies designate Rafael Betancourt for assignment

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss told reporters Sunday that the team designated veteran right-hander Rafael Betancourt for assignment.

Weiss admitted the conversation with the pitcher was tough, calling Betancourt a "warrior." The 40-year-old had recovered from a second Tommy John surgery to pitch this season with the Rockies.

While Weiss believes the 12-year veteran could be picked up, Betancourt himself admitted he doesn't see that as realistic, but is okay with that. The pitcher, who had a career-high 31 saves for the Rockies in 2012, said he is proud of his long career, if this is the end.

Betancourt is sporting a career-worst 6.18 ERA this season. He has 40 strikeouts over 39 1/3 innings.
