Phil Mickelson on money-laundering case: 'I don't feel like I need to comment'
Phil Mickelson spoke with the media Wednesday at Gullane Golf Club in advance of this week's Scottish Open.
To no one's surprise, the 45-year-old winner of 42 PGA Tour events was asked about his connection to a money-laundering case involving illegal gambling, which was reported last week - something he fully expected.
"Feel free to ask about it. I probably won't say anything, but feel free to ask," Mickelson said, according to Bob Harig of ESPN. "I understand you have editors and you need to ask questions."
When he was asked, the 20-plus-year pro said he's learned not to take public discussion about his career personally.
"People are going to say things good; they are going to say things bad; they are going to say things true; they are going to say things not true," Mickelson said, according to Alex Miceli of Golfweek. "The fact is, I'm comfortable enough with who I am as a person that I don't feel like I need to comment on every little report that comes out."
Court documents obtained by ESPN revealed that Mickelson allegedly transferred money to a man, Gregory Silveira, who was charged in federal court in California for laundering money in an illegal-gambling operation. Mickelson has not been charged with any crime.
Mickelson is not cited by name in any of the documents, and is not expected to face prosecution.
Silveira, who pleaded guilty to three counts of money laundering of funds between February 2010 and February 2013, faces sentencing Oct. 5.
