The well known FOX broadcaster Steve Byrnes lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, NASCAR announced. He was 56.

Byrnes was one of NASCAR's voices on air for the past 30 years, spending more than 15 years working races and shows for CBS, TNN, TBS and The History Channel.

He was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in Aug. 2013, and responded well enough to treatment that he was able to get back to work for the 2014 campaign.

Byrnes took a leave of absence in October, telling the story of his battle through social media. His last tweet on April 19 was inspiring, chronicling the life he lived and the people in his life.

NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France delivered a heartfelt statement, paying tribute to one of the men who embodied what the sport represents.

"His level of professionalism was matched only by the warmth he showed everyone he met," France said. "He battled cancer with tenacity, and was a true inspiration to everyone in the NASCAR family.

"Simply stated, we'll miss Steve dearly. Our thoughts are especially with his wife Karen and son Bryson during this difficult time."
