Rams' Jeff Fisher: RG3 trade was 'easy for us to do'
As Robert Griffin III wraps up what could be his final season wearing a Washington Redskins jersey - depending on what report you listen to - it becomes easier and easier for St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher to bask in the glory of a trade that landed his team a collection of high draft picks.
“It wasn’t difficult for us,” Fisher told Mike Jones of the Washington Post. “We looked at our roster and it wasn’t difficult to see that we had a lot of holes. So, it was easy for us to do.”
Prior to the 2012 draft, the Redskins traded a first and second round pick in 2012, a first-round pick in 2013, and a first-round pick in 2014 to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for the second overall pick in the draft. The Redskins used that pick to choose Griffin.
Although the Rams haven't exactly set the world on fire since pulling off that blockbuster deal, they have used their treasure trove of picks to fill gaping holes in their lineup. Fisher described the haul:
If you take into consideration I have three defensive starters that are playing at a real high level - Alec Ogletree is playing as good as any linebacker behind the ball the last few weeks, Janoris (Jenkins) is an outstanding corner who has two interceptions returned for touchdowns, and (defensive tackle Michael) Brockers. And then we were able to pick up (left tackle Greg Robinson), who is our future at left tackle, and we have Stedman Bailey, who in our last game had five catches for 100 yards, and Zac (Stacy) is an outstanding young back.
So, I think we’ve made the most of it. We’re building our team to compete in the division and I feel like we’re making strides. That’s one of the questions we wanted to have this year.
Fisher may be happy with how things worked out for his team following the trade, but he describes Griffin as a talented young quarterback who's a victim of unfortunate circumstances.
“We played Robert early his first year and he made a lot of plays, and to get that team into the playoffs as a rookie is pretty impressive,” Fisher said. “Unfortunately for him, he’s dealing with an offensive scheme change and he’s had injury. Those two things (from) a quarterback standpoint are just hard to overcome. I think he’s an outstanding talent and very hard to defend.”
