FINAL - Germany 2, Algeria 1: Germany advance to quarterfinal after edging out Algeria
It wasn't easy for Germany to book their ticket into the quarterfinals as they needed extra time to register a narrow 2-1 victory over Algeria on Monday night at the Estádio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre.
After both goalkeepers put on breathtaking displays throughout the 90 minutes and portions of extra time, it took a cheeky goal from André Schürrle to break the deadlock.
The Germans only needed one minute of extra time to score, as Schürrle's back-heel goal, courtesy of a Thomas Muller cross, eluded keeper Rais M'Bolhi and gave the Germans the advantage.
Algeria came close on several occasions to equalizing, but German midfielder Mesut Ozil doubled the lead with one minute to go in extra time.
Algeria pulled one back in stoppage time of extra time when Abdelmoumene Djabou hammered the ball past Manuel Neuer, but it was too little, too late for the Africans. Although Djabou's goal didn't mean much in the end, he was able to set a World Cup record.
