The Minnesota Timberwolves named Sam Mitchell an assistant coach on Tuesday. He will serve on head coach Flip Saunders' staff.

"We are excited to add Sam Mitchell to our coaching staff," said Saunders, via the team's official website. "As a player, Sam was always one of our more vocal leaders in the locker room and was a great influence on our team. Additionally his coaching experience, both as an assistant and as a head coach in Toronto, will make Sam a valuable member of our coaching staff."

Mitchell was named 2006-07 NBA Coach of the Year while with the Toronto Raptors, leading the team to two playoff appearances in his four full seasons as head coach of the team.

Mitchell spent 13 years as a player in the NBA, spending 10 seasons in Minnesota, where he appeared in 757 games.

The rest of Saunders' staff will be announced at a later date.
