Mourinho on head-butt: Pepe should behave better because 'he's not even a Portuguese man'
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was not pleased with his home country after their opening round loss to Germany, much like most of Portugal. But he felt especially frustrated by Pepe, who was sent off for head-butting Thomas Mueller.
"I think obviously the second goal is his fault," Mourinho said to Yahoo Sports, where he is working as an analyst for the World Cup. "He's on a zone but he has to make contact with the opponents and he left [Mats] Hummels and Sami [Khedira] completely on his own and nobody contacted him, no challenge and Hummels scored the second goal. After that I think the frustration of the mistake comes up and after that loses possession with the pressure of [Thomas] Müller and after that we can say is not a real aggression."
As you can tell, he was not a fan of the outburst, especially since the Portuguese were already down 2-0 when Pepe was sent off. Mourinho even went so far as to point out that Portugal is Pepe's adopted country (he is from Brazil), so he should be trying harder. Ouch. A little personal. But they know each other well from Real Madrid, and they are not known for getting along.
"Maybe he doesn't deserve a direct red card but because, in spite of not being a clear aggression, there is a body language that many, many times pushes the referees to have these kind of decisions," he added. "To leave a team playing with 10 men for such a long time is obviously a big handicap for the team. The fact that he's not even a Portuguese man, I think that should put even more pressure on him to behave in a certain way, which he didn't."
