Report: Spurs to announce Ettore Messina as new assistant coach

The San Antonio Spurs have built an entire franchise around seemingly innocuous moves that fly gently under the national radar, only for the parties involved to eventually become major contributors to the greater good.

On Tuesday afternoon the Spurs made another one of those moves, reportedly adding legendary coach Ettonre Messina to their staff.

Stuck with current head coach Gregg Popovich and his career 967-443 record (.686 winning percentage), the Spurs are expected to officially add Messina as the newest assistant to Popovich following the completion of the NBA Finals.

Messina's international record of success speaks for itself. He owns four Euroleague championships, four Italian League championships, seven Italian Cups, five Russian League championships, two Russian Cups, a Cup Winners Cup, a pair of Euroleague Coach of the Year awards, and a silver medal from the 1997 Olympics with Spain.

The European legend has reportedly been highly sought after by the multiple teams with head coaching vacancies, but it appears the franchise that has won 50 or more games 19 times in 20 years will claim yet another victory over the rest of the league.

This move is very, very Spurs.
