The Boston Red Sox selected high school right-hander Michael Kopech with the 33rd overall pick of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft on Thursday.
Kopech, a big hard-throwing righty out of Texas, is the team's second first-round pick of the draft. Scouts have expressed concern over his high-maintenance delivery, but he generates plenty of velocity with a fastball that runs up to 97 miles per hour.
The 6-foot-4 right-hander, who is committed to the University of Arizona, is compensation for the New York Yankees' signing of Jacoby Ellsbury.
