Red Sox' Middlebrooks on another DL stint: 'It's been a long couple years'

Another stint on the disabled list for Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks has him questioning when his luck will change.

“I’m waiting,” Middlebrooks told Tim Britton of the Providence Journal when asked when he thinks he'll catch a break. “I think I’m pretty due for it. It’s been a long couple years. I’ve got to hang in there. Things will turn around — hopefully. Just keep grinding it out.”

While some might not label Middlebrooks as being an unlucky guy - he won a World Series in his second season and is dating former NESN sideline reporter Jenny Dell - he has dealt with his fair share of unlucky injuries.

The 25-year-old had his rookie season cut short when he fractured his wrist after being hit by a pitch, an injury that contributed to his struggles during the start of the 2013 season. He has already missed 19 games this season with a calf strain and now, after taking a line drive off the hand that fractured his right index finger, Middlebrooks is out indefinitely.

“It’s hard to say at this point how long he’ll be down,” manager John Farrell said.

Once heralded as Kevin Youkillis' successor at third base, Middlebrooks is off to another slow start at the plate this season, batting .197/.305/.324 with two home runs and nine RBI through 21 games.
