Shawn Marion could be playing his final game with the Mavericks on Friday
Veteran forward Shawn Marion has spent the past five seasons as a member of the Dallas Mavericks. For the 15-year veteran, Friday's must-win Game 6 against the San Antonio Spurs could be his last as a member of the Mavs, with his five-year contract set to expire in the summer.
“I’m not looking at that right now,” said Marion, via ESPN. “We’ll talk about that when it’s done.”
Marion turns 36 next week, but The Matrix still looks to have plenty of basketball left in him. In this series with the Spurs, Marion's versatility has seen him guard each of the Spurs' top offensive options, point guard Tony Parker, power forward Tim Duncan, and shooting guard Manu Ginobili.
“We’d love to have five Marions and put them out there and guard all of their guys,” coach Rick Carlisle said.
Marion's scoring has come down in Dallas, to 11.3 points per game in his time with the Mavericks, though he's accepted a lesser roll in the offensive gameplan, getting many of his points through improvisation, and on second-chance opportunities.
Team owner Mark Cuban has expressed interest in bringing Marion back, though he will certainly draw interest from contenders like the Heat, who will be looking to replace the retiring Shane Battier.
For now, Marion is focused on Game 6, and extending his time with the Mavericks for at least one more game.
