Phil Davis says "it's not too late" for Jon Jones to back out of his UFC 172 title defense vs. Glover Teixeira
Phil Davis (12-1, 1 NC) has been one of the more vocal critics of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in the past, saying he "wants more of the softer side of the division."
Now, ahead of his UFC 172 fight with Anthony Johnson, Davis hit Jones with a few barbs, saying that while he was unsure whether Jones left his soul in the cage against Davis' training partner Alexander Gustafsson, he certainly "left a lot of blood," and that he wouldn't be surprised if Jones found a way to get out of his title defense at the same event.
"He may not fight at UFC 172, it's not too late for him to back out. It's happened before, okay? I'm just saying it might happen again," Davis told MMAjunkie.
With impressive wins over Alexander Gustafsson, Lyoto Machida and Antônio Rogério Nogueira, Davis is confused at his lack of a title shot, saying "apparently beating the number one contender doesn't move you up enough in the rankings."
"I'm ready for a title shot whenever it's available, and if he happens to back out of this fight for whatever reason, I'm willing to take on Glover Texeira for an interim championship," said Davis.
Trash-talking aside, Davis said he still favors Jones in his title defense against Teixeira.
