Scottie Scheffler: Loses playoff at RBC Heritage
Scheffler carded a bogey-free, four-under 67 in the final round of the RBC Heritage to finish with an 18-under cumulative score, but he finished as the runner-up after losing to Matt Fitzpatrick on the first playoff hole.
Analysis:
Like he did at The Masters last week, Scheffler surged up the leaderboard with a strong third round, firing a seven-under 64 that included six birdies on the front nine. He entered Sunday three strokes back of Fitzpatrick for the clubhouse lead, and that looked like it was going to be a big enough cushion for the latter, given the windy conditions at Harbour Town. Scheffler went bogey-free again in the final round, with his two birdies on the 15th and 16th closing the gap to one stroke. He needed help on the 18th after carding a par, and that help came after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the hole. Unfortunately for Scheffler, his approach shot on the playoff hole fell short of the green, and Fitzpatrick was able to close things out by sinking his 13-foot birdie putt. Scheffler has finished as the tournament runner-up in back-to-back weeks and has five top-5 finishes on the year (including his victory at The American Express in January). He won't participate in next week's Zurich Classic, so the next time Scheffler tees off will likely be at the next Signature Event, the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral that starts April 30.
