OWGR won't award LIV Golf points for next 2 events despite new partnership

The Official World Golf Ranking won't grant LIV Golf players points for the next two events on the Saudi-backed circuit's schedule, citing "insufficient" notice, the OWGR announced Thursday.

The disruptive tour formed a "strategic alliance" on Wednesday with the MENA Tour, which is officially recognized by the OWGR. As a result of the partnership, LIV Golf expected its players to receive points in the OWGR, beginning with the tournament in Thailand this week.

LIV Golf has yet to receive OWGR points. The tour only has two invitationals remaining in its inaugural campaign before the season-ending Team Championship in Miami in late October.

After linking up with the MENA Tour, LIV Golf players have now joined the developmental circuit, while all LIV Golf events will now be sanctioned by the little-known tour.

The OWGR said it is now reviewing the sweeping changes made to the MENA Tour, and a decision will be made on awarding points after the review is complete.

It's the latest roadblock LIV Golf has faced in its attempt to garner points in the OWGR.

LIV Golf players sent a letter in an effort to appeal to OWGR chairman Peter Dawson in September. The memo argued that omitting LIV Golf from the points system was akin to "leaving the Big 10 or the SEC out of the U.S. college football rankings, or leaving Belgium, Argentina, and England out of the FIFA rankings."
