Warriors legend Chris Mullin: Team should '100%' retire KD's jersey

Kevin Durant's belief that the Warriors should retire his jersey number has the support of at least one Golden State legend.

Chris Mullin, who played for the Warriors from 1985-97 and saw his No. 17 retired by the team, agrees that Durant's jersey should join his in the rafters one day.

"100%," Mullin said Saturday on NBC Sports Bay Area's Warriors pregame show. "And there's different levels of accomplishment. Kevin Durant's tenure here with the Golden State Warriors were three NBA Finals, two Finals MVPs ... he went out there and sacrificed his body to try to get that third championship in a row. So he's as unique a player (as) we've seen in the history of the game of basketball."

Durant told The Ringer's Logan Murdock in a recent interview that the Warriors and the Oklahoma City Thunder should both retire his number once he's done playing.

"OKC has to retire my jersey," Durant said. "It wouldn't even be good for the game of basketball if they didn't. The same with Golden State. I'm still doing what I'm doing here in Brooklyn, but if I continue on what I'm doing (for) four or five years, then I'll feel the same way about this program."

It appears likely that Durant will get his wish, at least in Golden State. Majority owner Joe Lacob stated following Durant's departure in 2019 that no Warriors player will wear No. 35 again as long as he's in charge.
