Gentry: Kings loss was 'most disappointed I've been in 34 years in the NBA'
Sacramento Kings interim head coach Alvin Gentry did not hold back when discussing his team's performance following the 127-102 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday.
The 67-year-old, who was coaching his first game since returning from COVID-19 protocols, told reporters, "It’s the most disappointed I’ve been in 34 years in the NBA."
“That performance was absolutely ridiculous. We didn’t play hard, we didn’t compete. We didn’t guard the ball, we didn’t guard screen and rolls. We didn’t follow the game plan. No competitiveness whatsoever," Gentry added, according to the Associated Press. "They basically toyed with us. I’m totally disappointed and everybody in this building should be disappointed."
The Kings stayed competitive in the first half, leading 50-49 going into the break. However, Sacramento's effort waned down the stretch, allowing 78 second-half points en route to a blowout loss.
Sacramento allowed 72 paint points, 19 offensive rebounds, and seven Memphis players to reach double figures in scoring.
With Sunday's defeat, the Kings have dropped seven of their last nine games, with all but one of their losses over that span coming by double digits.
The team fired head coach Luke Walton last month after posting a 6-11 record to begin the year, but have only gone 7-10 since Gentry took over.
As a result, Sacramento sits 12th in the Western Conference at 13-21, two games back of a play-in spot.
