The Phoenix Suns' reluctance to offer former No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton a maximum rookie extension has stalled contract discussions, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday.

The big man is reportedly adamant about getting a maximum five-year, $172.5 million deal. The same contract has already been signed by several of Ayton's rookie classmates, including Luka Doncic and Trae Young.

Suns ownership is reportedly still unsure whether Ayton is the caliber of player worthy of a maximum deal. With the rookie extension deadline set for Oct. 18, Phoenix risks allowing its promising young center to become a restricted free agent next summer.

The 23-year-old was a catalyst during the Suns' run to the NBA Finals last season, averaging 15.8 points and 11.8 rebounds while shooting 66% from the field.

Ayton's size and quickness at his position proved to be an integral part of his team's playoff victories over Anthony Davis' Lakers and Nikola Jokic's Nuggets.

Notably, Ayton's desired extension would give Phoenix its third maximum contract, joining Chris Paul and Devin Booker. It would also mark the first time the team paid luxury tax since owner Robert Sarver took over in 2009-10.
