Harry Kane was called off the bench for his first outing of the campaign in Tottenham Hotspur's 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The England captain replaced Heung-Min Son in the 72nd minute but couldn't double his side's lead after Dele Alli's first-half opener from the penalty spot.

Kane, 28, is in the middle of this summer's fiercest transfer tug-of-war in England as Manchester City try to wrest the unsettled Kane from Spurs' grasp. The reigning Premier League champions are reportedly prepared to smash the British transfer record to sign Kane, but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is avoiding their calls.

The summer transfer window closes on Aug. 31 for English clubs.

The Spurs XI remained unchanged against Wolves following last weekend's 1-0 win over Manchester City, with Son, Lucas Moura, and Steven Bergwijn leading the attack. But it was Alli, utilized as a box-to-box midfielder by new Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who won and then scored a penalty after 10 minutes.

Wolves boss Bruno Lage is now picking up the pieces after back-to-back league defeats to begin the campaign. Their latest loss wasn't for a want of trying as Adama Traore constantly threatened Tottenham's backline while Raul Jimenez and Trincao attempted nine shots between them. But they couldn't get a result against a Spurs side overseen by former Wolves handler Nuno.

Both teams return to action next Sunday. Tottenham host Watford while Wolves entertain Manchester United at Molineux.
