Thunder ink Gilgeous-Alexander to 5-year, $172M extension

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is getting a raise.

The 23-year-old point guard agreed to a five-year, $172-million maximum rookie contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, his agent told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Gilgeous-Alexander's new deal will begin in 2022-23 after he collects $5.5 million for the coming season.

The Kentucky product has enjoyed a quick rise since being picked 11th overall in 2018. After spending his rookie year with the Los Angeles Clippers, Gilgeous-Alexander became a central piece in the blockbuster haul delivered to the Thunder in exchange for All-Star wing Paul George.

Since arriving in Oklahoma City in 2019, the 6-foot-6 floor general has averaged 20.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and a steal per game with 37.5% accuracy from 3-point territory.

Gilgeous-Alexander is the second player from the increasingly vaunted 2018 draft class to receive a nine-figure extension, joining the Atlanta Hawks' Trae Young. Others eligible to cash in this offseason include Dallas Mavericks point forward Luka Doncic, Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton, and Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr.
