With the No. 8 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, the Orlando Magic have selected Michigan forward Franz Wagner.

Wagner has just completed his sophomore season with the Wolverines and offers far more upside than his older brother (Magic center Moritz Wagner) did at the time the latter was drafted in 2018. With an ability to defend at a high level and knock down outside shots, the younger Wagner has the necessary tools to contribute in a complementary role in today's NBA game.

The 19-year-old shined on the defensive end under Juwan Howard at Michigan, averaging one block and 1.3 steals per game. Wagner also chipped in 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest while connecting on 34.3% of his 3.6 long-range attempts. While you shouldn't expect the Berlin native to develop into a star, Wagner certainly fits the billing of a strong role player down the line.

Bio

Position: SF
School: Michigan
Height: 6-foot-9
Weight: 220 lbs
Wingspan: N/A
Max vertical: N/A

Strengths

  • Skilled wing defender capable of guarding both guards and forwards.
  • Ideal body type to thrive as a 3-and-D player at the next level.
  • Thrives as an off-ball defender by jumping passing lanes and beating opponents to their spots.
  • Excels in transition and as an off-ball cutter.

Weaknesses

  • Could stand to get to the free-throw line often (2.8 attempts per game as a sophomore).
  • Doesn't get great looks when attempting to create his own shot; thrives more as a catch-and-shoot option.
  • Slow shooting mechanics could allow defenders to close out more easily on his shot.
  • Lacks explosiveness and isn't a stellar ball-handler.
