Roma waited until the last possible moment, but they got their man in the end.

The Italian club announced the acquisition of Chris Smalling from Manchester United on Monday, finalizing the paperwork for a permanent deal just ahead of the Serie A transfer deadline.

The English defender will cost Roma €15 million.

"Nothing in life worth having comes easy," Smalling said. "My head and my heart has always been in Rome. I am delighted to now be yours. Daje Roma!"

The 30-year-old spent last season on loan with the Giallorossi, starting 29 league matches while establishing himself as a vital defensive stalwart. He wanted to remain in Rome at the end of his loan spell, and the two clubs worked throughout the summer to reach an agreement on a permanent switch.

It appeared at various times during the window that negotiations had broken down. But as is often the case, the time crunch of the deadline forced the sides to engage in more discussions and ultimately come to an accord.

Though results so far this season suggest Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs all the help he can get in central defense, Smalling never appeared to be in the running to hold down a consistent role with Manchester United.

He leaves the club after making 323 appearances in all competitions over a 10-year period.

Now back at Roma, he'll face increased competition for playing time following Marash Kumbulla's arrival from Hellas Verona.
