Clevinger gets cortisone shot in elbow, not ruled out for wild-card series

San Diego Padres right-hander Mike Clevinger has been diagnosed with a right elbow posterior impingement and received a cortisone shot Friday, the team announced.

Though Clevinger's timeline and availability for the playoffs remain unclear, general manager A.J. Preller hasn't yet ruled him out for San Diego's wild-card series, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. He will be re-evaluated before the team provides an official update on his status.

Clevinger, who had his most recent start pushed back due to biceps tendinitis, left Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels after one inning due to injury.

The 29-year-old is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and 19 strikeouts over 19 innings of action since the Padres acquired him from the Cleveland Indians on Aug. 31.

If Clevinger is unable to rejoin the rotation for the first round of the postseason, the Padres may go with the trio of Dinelson Lamet, Zach Davies, and Chris Paddack for the three-game set. Garrett Richards, whom the team recently moved to the bullpen from the rotation, could be another option.
