Report: MLB, MLBPA re-engaging on expanding playoffs for 2020
Major League Baseball and the MLBPA are reportedly re-engaging on potentially expanding the postseason for the shortened 2020 campaign, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
There seems to be optimism for postseason expansion, Heyman adds. The hope was to increase the number of playoff teams from 10 to 16.
The proposed expansion would see the top three seeds in each league pick their opponents via a selection show, reports ESPN's Buster Olney.
A decision would need to be made before the first pitch of the season, which is slated to take place Thursday at 7:08 p.m. ET between the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals.
Postseason expansion came up in the return-to-play negotiations, but no deal was struck between the two parties before the league mandated a 60-game season in late June. The union reportedly offered a plan to expand the playoff structure for 2020 and 2021 in order to generate additional revenue. The league rejected these proposals due to the suggested length of the regular seasons, which included a 114-game campaign this year.
