Heavy favorite Tiz the Law pulled away late to claim the 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, kicking off the reshuffled Triple Crown season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ridden by jockey Manuel Franco, Tiz the Law ran the shortened track in 1:46.53, pulling away late and winning by four lengths. Dr. Post finished in the runner-up spot, with Max Player coming in third.

The colt is the first New York-bred horse to win the Belmont Stakes since 1882. The race is traditionally the last leg of the Triple Crown, but it instead kicked off the series for the first time in history.

Without spectators in attendance, the race was shortened from a mile and a half to a mile and an eighth, as the Belmont Stakes is typically the final race and also the longest of the three.
