Twitter compares 'Space Jam' plot to NBA canceling season

The NBA announced Wednesday that it was suspending the 2019-20 season indefinitely after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19, and it didn't take long for Twitter to draw comparisons to the plot of "Space Jam."

In the 1996 movie, the NBA season is suspended after Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, and Muggsy Bogues have their talents stolen by cartoon aliens.

"After meeting with team owners, I have decided that until we can guarantee the health and safety of our NBA players, there will be no more basketball this season," the NBA commissioner says in one scene.

Players in the movie also refuse to enter their locker room over a fear of "germs."

In a weird coincidence, "Space Jam" was released on VHS on March 11, 1997 - exactly 23 years before the current NBA season was suspended.
