Tottenham's miserable week ends with humiliating defeat to Brighton
Four days after being battered by Bayern Munich, Tottenham suffered another dispiriting defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, losing 3-0 and Hugo Lloris to a potentially serious injury.
It took just three minutes for Spurs to fall behind. Lloris spilled a cross to gift Neal Maupay a simple header, marking the 10th time since the start of the 2016-17 season that the Frenchman has committed an error leading to a goal.
As he fell backward, Lloris appeared to land awkwardly on his arm. He required oxygen and left the field on a stretcher.
The nightmare continued in the 32nd minute when substitute 'keeper Paulo Gazzaniga parried a shot into the path of 19-year-old striker Aaron Connolly, who duly obliged with an easy finish.
After becoming the first teenager to score a Premier League goal for Brighton, Connolly bagged another in the 65th minute before walking off to a standing ovation.
It was an emphatic performance from Brighton, who fired 17 shots to Tottenham's eight.
"Lloris' injury had a massive impact on the game," visiting manager Mauricio Pochettino told BT Sport afterward. "It was so early in the game. To concede so early and losing our captain, it had an emotional impact on the team. We tried to find solutions, a different way to play, but it was impossible. It’s a very difficult moment."
Pochettino had implored his side to stick together after Bayern Munich ran away midweek with a 7-2 result, but his players showed no signs of unity on Saturday.
Spurs now enter the international break with one win in their last six matches.
