Heat's Johnson doesn't meet conditioning goal, will miss start of camp
The Miami Heat's intense physical regimen will keep James Johnson out of the start of training camp, as the forward fell short of conditioning requirements, the team announced Tuesday, according to the Sun Sentinel's Ira Winderman.
"Once he fulfills and maintains those requirements, he will rejoin the team," the team said.
Johnson has a bonus in his contract tied to body-fat percentage and weight. After joining the Heat in 2016, he said he dropped 37 lbs and reduced his body fat from 14.5% to 6.7%.
The Heat have one of the most rigorous physical training programs in the NBA, with team president Pat Riley usually insisting players be in "world-class shape."
The 32-year-old Johnson averaged 7.8 points and 3.2 rebounds in 55 games last season, missing time with an abdominal injury.
