Following a blowout loss to Michigan on Saturday, Rutgers fired head coach Chris Ash and offensive coordinator John McNulty, athletics director Pat Hobbs told Keith Sargeant of NJ Advance Media.

Tight ends coach Nunzio Campanile was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

"We appreciate Chris' dedicated efforts on behalf of our football program, our department, and our university," Hobbs said in a statement.

He added: "Progress has been achieved in many areas, but, unfortunately, that progress has not been realized on the field of play. As such, it is in the best interest of the program to make a change.''

Ash lasted just four games into his fourth season with the Scarlet Knights. He ends his tenure with an 8-32 record, and was just 3-26 in Big Ten play.

Rutgers is coming off a 52-0 loss to Michigan, dropping its record to 1-3 on the season.
