Woods shows flashes in return from injury with 71 at Medinah
Tiger Woods posted a 1-under 71 in Round 1 of the BMW Championship after withdrawing from the first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs last week with an injury.
"I didn't feel any tightness in my oblique at all," Woods said of his ailment, according to Golf Channel's Tiger Tracker.
The 43-year-old got off to a great start on Thursday. He birdied two of his first three holes at Medinah Country Club - where he's won two PGA Championships in his career - but failed to keep the momentum going.
Woods ended the day outside the top 40, six shots off the lead held by Justin Thomas and Jason Kokrak. He admitted after the round that he'll "have to make a lot of birdies" to get back into the mix.
Tiger entered the week 38th in the FedEx Cup standings and is currently sitting in 47th. Only the top 30 golfers advance to next week's Tour Championship, at which Woods won his 80th PGA Tour title last season.
His second round begins Friday at 10:37 a.m. ET.
