The Dark Knight appears one step closer to making a return.

Free-agent right-hander Matt Harvey has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Oakland Athletics, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman, who adds the A's plan to use Harvey as a starter.

After inking a one-year, $11-million deal with the Los Angeles Angels in December, Harvey authored a 7.09 ERA and career-low 5.88 K/9 in 12 starts. The Angels released him July 21.

Harvey, 30, will report to Oakland's Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The reported addition of Harvey could provide Oakland's rotation with potential depth as it continues its playoff push. The A's are currently two games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the second wild-card spot in the American League.

A's starting rotation - 2019 Stats

PITCHER IP ERA WHIP SO
Mike Fiers 147.1 3.30 1.11 99
Tanner Roark 122 4.06 1.39 121
Chris Bassitt 113.2 3.56 1.18 108
Brett Anderson 139 3.95 1.26 71
Homer Bailey 122.1 5.22 1.40 108

Harvey was once a dominant member of the New York Mets' starting rotation, finishing fourth in National League Cy Young voting in 2013. He was a member of the Mets squad that lost the 2015 World Series to the Kansas City Royals, memorably pitching eight strong innings in a series-deciding Game 5 loss.

He owns a 4.04 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 145 appearances (140 starts) over a seven-year career split between the Mets, Angels, and Cincinnati Reds.
