Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, is among the newest inductees into Canada's Walk of Fame.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Toronto Raptors winning the country's first-ever NBA championship.
A native of Almonte, Ontario, Naismith created basketball in 1891 while teaching at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass. The game was initially played with a soccer ball and peach baskets.
The 2019 Walk of Fame class also includes former NHL player Mark Messier and Olympic speed skater Cindy Klassen.
