The San Francisco Giants and their historic rivals are not ruling out the possibility of working out a trade involving one of the top relief aces on the market this season.

The Los Angeles Dodgers haven't made a trade with the Giants since 2007, but are considering the prospect of making a deal for Will Smith, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

The left-handed reliever owns a 2.01 ERA and 2.10 FIP over 31 1/3 innings this year and has notched 20 saves. The 29-year-old may end up amounting to a rental, though, as Smith is eligible to hit free agency this upcoming winter.

As Morosi notes, the two rivals have made deals so infrequently that the fourth-most recent trade made between the two franchises would have been sending Jackie Robinson from Brooklyn to New York in 1956 if it hadn't been later voided.

The Giants, however, hired Farhan Zaidi - who had previously been the general manager of the Dodgers - as their new president of baseball operations this past winter.

Coincidentally, the Dodgers already employ a Will Smith. The rookie catcher owns a .304/.360/.739 slash line over 25 plate appearances with three home runs, including a recent walk-off shot against the Colorado Rockies. If the Dodgers do acquire the reliever, the possibility of an all-Will Smith battery would exist.
