Curry's Toronto middle school coach cheering for Warriors in Finals

Stephen Curry's middle school basketball coach is putting his Toronto loyalties aside for the NBA Finals.

James Lackey coached Curry at Queensway Christian College when the son of then-Raptors shooting guard Dell Curry attended the school in 2001 and 2002. The two have since remained in touch and meet up whenever the Golden State Warriors visit Toronto, according to John Chidley-Hill of The Canadian Press.

Despite still working in the Toronto area, Lackey's relationship with Curry leaves him slightly conflicted when it comes to who he's cheering for in the NBA Finals.

"I'm sort of torn right now on who to cheer for and the kids are certainly asking, 'So who're you going for? Who're you going for?'" Lackey, who now teaches at Brampton Christian School, said. "I have to tell them that I'm still going for the Warriors even though I love the Raptors. Because of the connection with Steph I have to cheer for him."

Curry spoke fondly about his time in Toronto during a news conference Monday.

"It was a great time there, met some really cool people," he said. "Still in touch with my middle school coach, James Lackey, who still supports me to this day. I mean, there's a lot of connections.

"Even at the arena, a lot of the same people work as ushers or security or in the back that were there when me and my brother were running around causing trouble. It'll be cool to take in that full experience."
