Featherweight champion Max Holloway and contender Frankie Edgar have verbally agreed to a title bout at UFC 240 in Edmonton, Alberta, on July 27, ESPN's Brett Okamoto reported.

It's the third attempt at this matchup after two previous bookings were scrapped due to injuries.

Holloway owns a 20-4 record and recently had his 13-fight winning streak snapped by Dustin Poirier in an interim lightweight title fight at UFC 236 in April.

Edgar, 23-6-1, has won three of his last four fights, with the lone loss coming via knockout at the hands of Brian Ortega last March. Holloway vanquished Ortega by TKO in December in the fight prior to his lightweight championship bout.

Featherweight contender Alexander Volkanovski believed he'd earned a title shot after defeating No. 1-ranked featherweight Jose Aldo at UFC 237 on Saturday. Instead, Edgar will receive his third shot at the belt. He lost to Aldo in his previous two featherweight championship fights, both via decision.

Here's our senior MMA editor James Lynch explaining why this fight makes sense:
