The Socrates Brito era is over.

The Toronto Blue Jays designated the struggling outfielder for assignment as part of a flurry of roster moves ahead of their game against the Chicago White Sox, the team announced Friday.

Toronto acquired Brito from the San Diego Padres (just days after the Padres had claimed him from Arizona) on April 2 in exchange for prospect Rodrigo Orozco. The trade did not work out as the team hoped. Over his 17 games with the Blue Jays, Brito struck out in 17 of his 43 plate appearances while recording just three hits and a .291 OPS.

Because he is out of minor-league options, the Blue Jays now have seven days to either trade, release, or assign him to the minors.

Outfielder Jonathan Davis was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take Brito's place on the 25-man roster. Davis, who made his big-league debut last year, has been one of the hottest hitters in the International League, slashing .306/.493/.633 with four homers, four doubles, 16 walks, and four steals over 16 games to start the season.

Veteran reliever Javy Guerra was also purchased from Triple-A Friday in a move that fills the 40-man roster spot vacated by Brito. Guerra put up a 5.40 ERA in nine outings for Toronto earlier this year before being DFA'd on April 18.

The Blue Jays also placed veteran starter Clay Buchholz on the 10-day injured list Friday with what the team is calling right shoulder inflammation. Buchholz was supposed to start Friday before being scratched due to what the right-hander initially told TSN's Scott Mitchell was a minor lat strain.

Left-hander Thomas Pannone, who had been optioned to Buffalo on Thursday, was recalled in a corresponding roster move.

Toronto enters play Friday on a five-game losing streak.
