Report: Brewers interested in Murphy

The Milwaukee Brewers are interested in filling the void at second base by signing Daniel Murphy, sources tell Robert Murray of The Athletic.

The Brewers are exploring their options through free agency and potential trades and Murphy's name has popped up a possible replacement for the recently non-tendered Jonathan Schoop.

Murphy, 33, was limited to 91 games in 2018 due to offseason knee surgery. When healthy, he put together a respectable batting line of .299/.336/.454 with 12 home runs and 15 doubles with the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs.

Milwaukee struggled to get consistent production from the keystone last season with Jonathan Villar - part of the Schoop trade - and Hernan Perez getting the bulk of playing time at the position.

While they are certainly looking to upgrade, the team's top prospect is 22-year-old second baseman Keston Hiura. He could make the leap to the majors in 2019.
