The Cleveland Cavaliers reneged on an understanding with Kyle Korver that they would either trade or buy out the veteran's contract if LeBron James departed Cleveland via free agency this past summer, according to The Athletic's Joe Vardon.

Korver had asked the Cavs to move him during the summer if James were to leave, so he could relocate his family to the next city, according to Vardon. The report adds that Korver asked again for a trade following James' departure, but that the Cavaliers refused because they intended to compete for a playoff spot.

Now, with Kevin Love injured and coach Tyronn Lue fired, Cleveland appears firmly headed for the lottery.

Korver, who turns 38 in March, has one year left on his contract after this season. While his minutes have dropped each of the last six seasons, the sharpshooter would be a solid addition to any contender's bench for his catch-and-shoot abilities. He's hitting 38.1 percent of his shots from beyond the arc through eight games this season.
