Mets exec: 'Unrealistic' for Wright to be activated in near future
John Ricco has a message for New York Mets fans anticipating captain David Wright's return from injury: Don't get your hopes up.
"Quite frankly, at this point, he hasn't been able to make some of the benchmarks that were laid out for him," Ricco, one of the team's acting general managers, told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo on Tuesday.
"It's unrealistic to think he'll be activated anytime soon."
Wright hasn't appeared in the majors since 2016 and has made just 13 appearances in the minor leagues while trying to recover following procedures on his shoulder, neck, and back.
News of Wright's assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas earlier Tuesday stoked expectations that the 35-year-old would return to the Mets' lineup in the near future, but Ricco quickly doused any sparks of optimism.
"We just haven't seen that level of consistency of playing on a quantity or quality basis at this point," Ricco said, adding that "pretty much everything" about Wright's current ability was a barrier to the seven-time All-Star's return.
