IndyCar driver Robert Wickens underwent surgery on Monday for injuries sustained during a crash at Pocono Raceway over the weekend, according to a statement released by the racing series.

Wickens was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He had titanium rods and screws successfully placed in his spine. The 29-year-old, who suffered fractures in both legs as well as his right arm in addition to a thoracic spinal fracture, is expected to undergo further tests

The injuries were sustained during a crash during the ABC Supply 500 caused by the front of Wickens' car clipping the rear of Ryan Hunter-Reay's car. When Hunter-Reay's car spun as a result, Wickens' vehicle became airborne, slamming into the wall and eventually the fence.

The IndyCar rookie previously won the 2011 Formula Renault 3.5 Series as well as the 2006 Formula BMW USA. He made the transition to IndyCar this year to compete alongside childhood friend and fellow Canadian James Hinchcliffe.
