Maryland puts Durkin on administrative leave

Maryland announced Saturday that head coach DJ Durkin has been placed on administrative leave while the school investigates his program and the reportedly "toxic" culture enforced by his staff.

First-year offensive coordinator Matt Canada will take over Durkin's duties on an interim basis.

"I am extremely concerned by the allegations of unacceptable behaviors by members of our football staff detailed in recent media reports," athletic director Damon Evans said in a statement. "We are committed to fully investigating the program."

An ESPN report Friday night offered several horrifying stories that paint the picture of a coaching culture under Durkin predicated on the fear and intimidation of players.

Maryland's training staff is under fire for reportedly failing to recognize signs of heatstroke before offensive lineman Jordan McNair collapsed during a team workout in May. McNair died a couple weeks later at the age of 19. Maryland reportedly put its head trainers on administrative leave Saturday morning while continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding McNair's death.

"The safety and well-being of our student-athletes is our highest priority," Evans added in his statement. "These alleged behaviors are not consistent with the values I expect all of our staff to adhere to and we must do better. You will be hearing from me as our work continues to rebuild the culture of respect in our football program."

Durkin, who was hired by Maryland ahead of the 2016 campaign, produced a 10-15 record through his first two seasons.
