Bellator 200 predictions: Is Mousasi ready to reign?
Prior to Friday's tape-delayed Bellator 200 in London, England, theScore's Mitch Sanderson makes his picks for the evening's main-card bouts.
Middleweight Championship
Rafael "The Blessed" Carvalho (6-0 Bellator, 15-1)
vs.
Gegard "The Dreamcatcher" Mousasi (1-0 Bellator, 43-6-2)
From Lorenz Larkin to Benson Henderson, several former UFC fighters who have "moved down" to Bellator have found the competition harder than expected. Mousasi won his promotion debut over Alexander Schlemko last October in close fashion after leaving the UFC on a five-fight winning streak, and now faces Bellator's best 185-pounder in Carvalho.
Carvalho, a 31-year-old knockout artist, has only had three of his wins come by decision and scored a 44-second finish in his last outing. Mousasi has only been KO'd once in his career and with 51 career bouts under his belt, he knows how to stay away from Carvalho's power strikes.
THE PICK: Mousasi
Welterweight
Michael "Venom" Page (8-0 Bellator, 12-0)
vs.
David "The Caveman" Rickels (13-4 Bellator, 19-4)
Scott Coker keeps lining 'em up and Page keeps knocking 'em down.
The 31-year-old welterweight has been one of Bellator's best finds but has mostly showcased his talent against lesser opponents. Rickels may be the most accomplished opponent Page has had to date, though he's moving up from lightweight for London's card. Page has been away from Bellator since November 2016, debuting as a pro boxer last October with a third-round knockout.
Moving a former lightweight up one division to face a rising star doesn't pass the smell test for a legitimate contest.
THE PICK: Page
Light Heavyweight
Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis (5-1 Bellator, 18-4)
vs.
Linton "The Swarm" Vassell (7-3 Bellator, 18-6)
Davis and Vassell seem to have faced everyone in the Bellator light heavyweight division but each other. Since coming over from the UFC, five of Davis' six opponents have also fought Vassell, though the only loss they share is to 205-lb champ Ryan Bader.
Davis would likely be a top-five light heavyweight contender in the UFC if he were still with his old promotion. His only career losses have come by Bader (twice by split decision) and in UFC title eliminators. He's yet to show any signs of falling to anything but the top level of competition.
THE PICK: Davis
Catchweight (163 lbs)
Aaron "The Joker" Chalmers (0-0 Bellator, 3-0)
vs.
Ashley Griffiths (0-1 Bellator, 4-6)
Chalmers should get a big cheer from the crowd in London. The 30-year-old is a reality TV personality in the UK, appearing in five seasons of "Geordie Shore" and an episode of "Ex on the Beach." He's finished all three of his first pro fights in the first round with BAMMA and now faces the only fighter on the card with more than one fight and a losing record. Griffiths is on a four-bout losing streak with each matchup ending in a finish and could be sent out to get slaughtered for the last time in Bellator.
THE PICK: Chalmers
