Report: Suspended Cano to undergo surgery on broken hand

Robinson Cano, the Seattle Mariners star who was just suspended 80 games for violating the league's joint drug agreement, will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a broken bone in his right hand, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

An errant pitch from Blaine Hardy fractured the fifth metacarpal in Cano's right hand Sunday, forcing him to the disabled list for the first time since 2006. Games missed while on the DL, however, will count toward his suspension.

Cano - who tested positive for Furosemide, a diuretic commonly used as a masking agent - is eligible to return from his suspension Aug. 14. Should the Mariners qualify for the postseason, though, he will not be eligible to play.

"Robinson made a mistake. He has explained to us what happened, accepted the punishment, and has apologized to the fans, the organization, and his teammates," the Mariners said in a statement. "We will support Robinson as he works through this challenge."
