Major League Baseball announced Monday that Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna will have his administrative leave extended through May 21.

Osuna was placed on a paid seven-day leave last Tuesday after he was arrested and charged with assault. He is scheduled to appear in court June 18.

The league had five options with Osuna's leave expiring. They could reinstate him, impose immediate discipline, defer discipline to a later date, impose a paid suspension pending resolution of legal proceedings, or request the players' association extend the leave, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.

The Blue Jays released a statement following the arrest backing the commissioner's office for its decision to place Osuna on leave while the incident is investigated. There's no timetable for Osuna's return to the Blue Jays.

This season, the 23-year-old has posted a 2.93 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings, while converting nine saves.
