Cora doesn't think Price's video-game obsession played a part in CTS diagnosis

Could Fortnite be behind David Price's carpal tunnel syndrome?

Speaking with reporters prior to Wednesday's matchup against the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora was asked if Price's injury was related to his video-game obsession, specifically with Fortnite - a multi-player survival game.

"From what I know, David has played video games his whole life," Cora said, according to Chad Jennings of The Athletic. "It seems like Fortnite now is the one everybody is playing, but last year, I saw a lot of guys playing FIFA. That's a lot of playing, too. So, there's a lot of (other) teams playing Fortnite, too. We'll talk about it tomorrow."

Price was scratched from Wednesday's start due to continued numbness in his left hand. After being sent back to Boston, doctors revealed it to be a mild case of carpal tunnel, most often caused by repetitive hand and wrist motions or activities over a prolonged period of time.

The diagnosis came two days after a piece by The Athletic's Jen McAffrey touched on Fortnite's impact and popularity within the Red Sox clubhouse. Price, who said the game has "taken over," admitted to playing for several hours on game days and off days.

"I mean, it can happen in different ways," Cora said of Price's injury. "Like I said earlier today, it's about repetition and I don't know, you throw bullpens, you throw off of flat ground, you throw games, you make adjustments with pitches, I don't know, the only thing we know is it's this and, for me, this is quote-unquote good news compared to thinking about something else."

Price is expected to throw a bullpen session in New York on Thursday, and if all goes well, could appear in the club's next series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
